The Senegal project is MDSE’s newest project. The project is located in Dindefelo in the Kedougou region of Senegal, and the MDSE Senegal team is partnered with the Dakar American University Of Science and Technology (DAUST) through a connection between Dr. Sidy Ndao and Dr. Jungho Kim.

The Senegal project has been working with a rural health clinic to improve their access to consistent electricity. There are frequent blackouts which affect the clinic’s ability to provide care to their patients, many of whom are expecting mothers, a particularly vulnerable group. To date, the project team has installed a solar array for the clinic with a battery backup system. They are now investigating evaporative cooling systems for the clinic to help keep patients cool, as the team learned that many of the clinic’s fatalities occur due to overheating, and not for the original conditions that the patients checked into the clinic for. The team will travel to implement swamp coolers and a misting system over the 2024 Spring break.
